Why boost your foal's gut flora?

Foals are born with a very underdeveloped digestive microbiome. Through colostrum (the first milk), thousands of beneficial bacteria colonize the foal's digestive tract. The microflora then begins to establish and grow. However, various bacterial populations—both beneficial and pathogenic—are present in the foal's environment, even when it appears clean. If the microflora (beneficial bacteria) do not establish themselves quickly, pathogenic bacteria can invade the digestive tract, multiply, and cause conditions such as neonatal diarrhea or, in more serious cases, sepsis (a bloodstream infection leading to septic shock). The Process® range of nutritional supplements promotes the establishment and support of the microbiome from the moment the foal is born.

Weaning also affects digestive tract health. The foal transitions from a milk-based diet to one consisting of concentrates and forage. This can disrupt the intestinal bacterial balance, leading to digestive issues. The stress caused by weaning can also disrupt this balance.
