A healthy digestive tract is essential for converting ingested food into energy. Unfortunately, the digestive health of senior horses is often compromised for several reasons.

First, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is common in senior horses to help manage arthritic pain. These molecules can cause dysbiosis and colitis, which may manifest as diarrhea, colic, and weight loss.

Second, senior horses, particularly those with Cushing's disease, are susceptible to infections and are therefore more frequently treated with antibiotics. Some of these medications have known side effects that can disrupt the microflora.

Digestion can also be less efficient due todental issues associated with aging. A horse's ability to chew its food is consequently reduced.
