Influence of birth mode and pre- and postbiotic supplementation on the establishment of the gut microbiota in calves
This study of over 100 calves confirms the 1st results measured in 12 calves (Faubladier & Guin, 2017) and highlights that there is no difference in the diversity and richness of the microbiota of newborn calves delivered by cesarean section versus natural birth, but there is a difference in composition, suggesting a fragility in the microbiota balance of calves born by cesarean section. It demonstrates that it is possible to favorably influence the establishment of the microbiota from the 1st days of life and for the long term (20 days) through a 2-day supply of ProbioactiFAP® at birth (Fortiflor® oral paste), regardless of the mode of birth. The increase in lactobacillus richness suggests easier milk digestion, and the significant impact on microbiota diversity points to better growth and improved health status, as observed in a previous study on calves with recurrent diarrhea (a 50% reduction) - Faubladier & Guin, 2016 — Veterinary Doctoral Thesis - Mélanie Save, 2021- VetAgro Sup - INRAE - GTV BFC - Original Process
