Calf health and performance: the importance of the gut microbiota
A veterinary thesis examined the impact of calving method (cesarean section vs. natural birth) and pre- and postbiotic supplementation on calf microbiota, as well as their health and performance. The calving method does not alter the richness and diversity of the newborn's microbiota at birth, but its composition differs and the balance is more fragile following a cesarean section. Regardless of the calving method, pre- and postbiotic supplementation (Fortiflor® oral paste, administered over 2 days at birth) significantly increases microbiota richness, particularly in bacteria that aid milk digestion, and notably improves microbiota diversity, which correlates with better calf health.
