Impact of ProbioactiFAP® and antibiotics on the digestive microbiota of fattening ducks
Results of a study on the impact of ProbioactiFAP® and antibiotics on the mulard duck microbiota
At the 15th Poultry Research Days, Dr. Thierry Mauvisseau presented the results of a study on the impact of ProbioactiFAP® and antibiotics on the mulard duck microbiota.
Abstract: Mulard duck fattening was once accompanied by antibiotic treatment or copper, both of which have been significantly reduced due to antibiotic resistance and environmental protection concerns. The objective of this study was to measure the impact of administering an alternative solution consisting of a mixture of prebiotics and postbiotics (ProbioactiFAP®) and to compare the morphological and functional effects, as well as the impact on the digestive microbiota of fattening ducks, against a negative control group (no treatment) and a positive control group (antibiotic prophylaxis). The trial was conducted in a fattening facility on 7 subjects upon arrival, and then on 7 ducks from each group at the 9th (T9) and 17th meal (T17). For each subject, a digestive assessment was performed, including an examination of the crop, ileum, and ceca, as well as weighing, measurement of intestinal length, digestive pH, and counts of various digestive microbiota populations using the Miseq sequencer. At T9, the weight increase in the ProbioactiFAP® group was greater, and the decrease in duodenal and jejunal pH was more rapid. Amoxicillin drastically reduced lactobacilli in the crop at T9.
The ProbioactiFAP® stimulate lactobacilli at T9, along the entire digestive tract, starting from the crop and particularly in the ileum, which may explain the faster drop in pH linked to the acidic substances they secrete.
Administering ProbioactiFAP® helps strengthen and maintain a better balance of the digestive microbiota compared to antibiotic treatment, while respecting bacterial diversity, limiting inflammation, and supporting performance.
